How to Choose Your Dream Christchurch Wedding Photographer

Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting seasons of your life, but it can also feel overwhelming when you start searching for the right people to bring your day to life. And when it comes to photography, the stakes are even higher. These aren’t just pretty pictures. They’re the images that will tell your story for decades to come, the ones you’ll show your kids, frame on your walls, and look back on when you want to relive the joy, the chaos, and the magic of that day.

I’m Lavender, and together with my husband Tim, we photograph weddings across New Zealand and beyond. We’re a creative husband-and-wife photo duo with a love for storytelling,  capturing weddings in a way that’s intentional, artful, and deeply personal. Our approach is about more than just taking beautiful photos. It’s about creating imagery that feels like you: real, emotional, creative, and unforgettable.

If you’re starting to search for your wedding photographer and feeling a little lost in the process, this guide is for you. Here’s everything you need to know before you book.

1. Know What Style Makes Your Heart Sing

Before you start reaching out to photographers, it’s worth taking a moment to think about the style of images you love. Photography isn’t one-size-fits-all — every photographer has a slightly different approach, and the style you choose will shape how your day is remembered.

There are three broad styles you’ll see most often:

  • Documentary / Candid: Real, unposed storytelling that captures the in-between moments.
  • Editorial / Creative: Thoughtfully composed, magazine-inspired imagery with a focus on artistry and aesthetics.
  • Classic / Traditional: Timeless, posed shots and formal portraits that follow a more structured approach.

Our work blends documentary and editorial — meaning we capture all the raw, unscripted moments as they unfold, but also take time to create artful, intentional portraits and detail shots that feel cinematic and creative. If you love the idea of photographs that feel both authentic and elevated, that might be the right fit for you too.

2. Connection Matters More Than You Think

One of the most common mistakes I see couples make is choosing their photographer based solely on price. While budget is important, the connection you have with your photographer will shape your entire experience  and, honestly, the final images too.

Your photographer will be with you for almost every part of the day: when you’re getting ready, when you walk down the aisle, when you have those quiet, emotional moments with your loved ones. It’s so important you feel comfortable around them like you can fully be yourselves.

That’s why I always start with a consult call. It’s not just a formality, it’s a chance for us to get to know each other and see if we vibe. I want to understand what matters most to you, the kind of energy you want on your wedding day, and how you envision your story being told. If you value creativity, love candid moments, and are drawn to imagery that captures how the day felt, chances are we’ll be a great match.

3. Look Beyond the Portfolio — Think About the Experience

A beautiful portfolio is important, but it’s only one part of the puzzle. What truly shapes your wedding photography experience is everything that happens behind the scenes,  from how your photographer communicates to how they support you during the planning process.

Here’s a glimpse into what working with us looks like:

  • Consultation Call: Our first step is always a relaxed conversation to make sure we’re the right fit.
  • Questionnaire: Before the call, I’ll send a detailed questionnaire. This helps me understand what’s most important to you, from family dynamics to key traditions, and even timeline logistics.
  • Timeline Support: Based on your answers, I’ll help you plan a photography-friendly schedule so your day flows naturally and you don’t feel rushed.
  • Engagement Session: I always recommend booking one. It’s the perfect way for us to connect before the wedding, ease any camera nerves, and capture some beautiful images without the pressure of the wedding day.

These steps aren’t just extras, they’re how we make sure your photography experience feels seamless, personal, and enjoyable from start to finish.

4. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Two Perspectives

Another thing that sets us apart is that Tim and I are one of the only husband-and-wife photography duos in New Zealand. While many couples offer a photo + video team, we’re both photographers which means you get two creative perspectives, two storytellers, and twice the coverage.

While I might be focused on capturing the quiet moments a parent’s tear, a small detail, or a fleeting glance — Tim might be documenting the bigger picture, like the energy of your guests or the movement on the dance floor. Together, we’re able to tell the full story of your day in a way that feels layered, complete, and uniquely yours.

And if you’re dreaming of having video too, don’t worry  we work closely with talented videographers and can help you find the perfect match to round out your team.

5. Think Ahead — Timing Is Everything

When should you book your photographer? In most cases, I recommend securing your date around 12 months out. This gives you plenty of time to plan, book your engagement session, and build a relationship with the person who’ll be by your side all day.

If your engagement is shorter, don’t panic just prioritize finding someone you truly connect with. It’s always better to work with the right photographer on a shorter timeline than to rush into a decision you’re unsure about.

6. Watch Out for These Red Flags

It’s just as important to know what to avoid. Here are a couple of common mistakes I see couples make:

  • Choosing based on price alone: Photography is one of the only parts of your wedding you’ll have forever. A slightly lower price won’t matter if you don’t love your photos or feel disconnected from the experience.
  • Booking someone who doesn’t specialize in weddings: Shooting weddings requires more than technical skill  it’s about anticipation, communication, and the ability to adapt quickly. If photography is their side hustle, they may not be able to give you the full support and expertise you deserve.

7. Bonus: Ask About the Little Extras

Finally, when comparing photographers, ask about the details beyond just the hours and images. Things like:

  • Do they offer film photography for that timeless, nostalgic feel?
  • Will they help with timeline planning or offer vendor recommendations?
  • Do they provide a wedding guide or tips to help you prepare?
  • Are there options for albums, prints, or keepsakes to preserve your story?

These details might seem small, but they’re what transform your experience from good to unforgettable.
